Mutual Funds in India

India's rules for people who hold Indian funds from abroad

Five short guides to what India asks of a mutual fund holder living in the U.S., Canada, the UK or Europe: tax, accounts, paperwork, fund-house limits and family matters.

Prepared by Prem Tax and Accounting Corp. Last checked against official sources on November 5, 2026.

India's rules reach a fund holder in three places: the tax department, the foreign exchange rules and the fund house itself. They follow you whether you live in Chicago, Toronto, London or Pune. This group sets out all three in plain English, using FY 2026-27 (April 2026 to March 2027).

  • Tax: rates, holding periods, TDS (tax deducted at source) and IDCW payouts.
  • Accounts: who may invest, NRE and NRO accounts, and getting money out.
  • Paperwork: KYC (know your client), PAN, FATCA and CRS forms, and how to buy from abroad.
  • Fund houses: a dated snapshot of which ones restrict U.S. and Canadian residents.
  • Family: nominees, heirs and what a move between countries changes.

We found no Indian law that bars U.S. or Canadian residents from owning Indian funds; where a fund house says no, that is its own policy. Form numbers changed on 1 April 2026 and the foreign exchange rules are under review, so see our sources and updates page. We prepare U.S. returns and work alongside your adviser in India, Canada or Europe. See the countries guides for reporting and our Indian CPA page for how we help.
