Mutual Funds in India

The basics of Indian mutual funds, in plain English

Three short guides to start with: what an Indian mutual fund is, what it costs and which statements to keep, and how the rupee changes what you earn at home.

Prepared by Prem Tax and Accounting Corp. Last checked against official sources on November 5, 2026.

Before the rules come the basics. A fund holder abroad needs three things in hand: what the fund is and who runs it, what it costs and which papers to save, and how the rupee moves your return in dollars, pounds or euros. Industry figures here are AMFI's for September 2026.

  • What it is: the trust, the fund house, NAV, units and folios.
  • Fees, SIPs and statements: expense caps, direct and regular plans, exit loads, SIP rules and records.
  • Exchange rates: ten years of official rates and how each country picks one.

Ready for the next step? See every SEBI category or India's rules for investors abroad. Our glossary explains terms such as NAV, folio and IDCW, and our Indian CPA page shows how we work with your Indian adviser.
