The dates that matter through the year for individuals, business owners, payroll, sales tax and foreign reporting. Dates are for calendar-year taxpayers.

Weekends and holidays. When a due date falls on a weekend or a legal holiday, it generally moves to the next business day. Fiscal-year businesses and many state dates differ. Most states follow the federal April 15 date for individuals, with exceptions such as Delaware, Hawaii, Iowa, Louisiana and Virginia.
January
- Jan 15: fourth quarter estimated tax payment (individuals, and owners of pass-through businesses).
- Jan 31: send W-2s and 1099-NECs to workers; file them; Form 941 for the fourth quarter; Form 940.
- Annual state unemployment and withholding reconciliations, in many states.
February
- Feb 28 (paper) or Mar 31 (electronic): file 1099-MISC and 1099-K forms with the IRS.
- Many employers must furnish 1095-C and similar health coverage forms.
March
- Mar 15: S corporation (1120-S) and partnership (1065) returns and K-1s are due, or file an extension.
- Mar 15: elections for S corporation status for the year (Form 2553) are due for calendar-year companies.
April
- Apr 15: individual returns (1040) and extension requests (Form 4868); first quarter estimated taxes; C corporation returns (1120); FBAR (FinCEN 114) due, with an automatic extension to Oct 15.
- Apr 15: last day to make most IRA and HSA contributions for the prior year.
- Apr 30: Form 941 for the first quarter.
May
- May 15: tax-exempt organization returns (Form 990) for calendar-year filers.
June
- Jun 15: second quarter estimated taxes; U.S. citizens abroad get an automatic extension to file to this date.
July
- Jul 31: Form 941 for the second quarter.
September
- Sep 15: third quarter estimated taxes; extended S corporation and partnership returns are due.
October
- Oct 15: extended individual returns, extended C corporation returns, and extended FBARs are due.
- Oct 31: Form 941 for the third quarter.
November
- Plan before year end: retirement plan contributions, equipment purchases, charitable giving, estimated tax true-ups, 401(k) deferrals.
December
- Dec 31: last day for many year-end moves: solo 401(k) employee deferrals, required minimum distributions, gifts, harvesting losses, and paying deductible expenses.
- Check your payroll for year-end bonuses, 1099 vendor information and fringe benefits.
