Specialized Investment Funds and MF Lite: what they are and what is open
SIF and MF Lite are new SEBI products, not scheme categories. Here are the rules in force, the NRI access question that SEBI has not yet answered and the tax points no official source covers.
Prepared by Prem Tax and Accounting Corp. Last checked against official sources on November 5, 2026.
SEBI has created two newer fund products: the Specialized Investment Fund (SIF) and MF Lite. Neither is a scheme category, and several questions are still open. The New-Product Margin Book below is a place to note what you learn. It recommends nothing.
- SIF: a separate product of an eligible mutual fund since 1 April 2025, with a Rs 10 lakh minimum per investor across all strategies, accredited investors excepted.
- MF Lite: a lighter registration for fund houses that run only passive schemes.
- NRI access to a SIF below Rs 10 lakh is not settled; SEBI has issued no circular on it.
- No official source we found says how India or other countries tax these products.
What SEBI requires
| SIF strategy | Rule |
|---|---|
| Hybrid Long-Short | At least 25% equity and 25% debt |
| Active Asset Allocator Long-Short | Interval scheme; twice-weekly redemption listed |
| Sectoral Debt Long-Short | At least 2 sectors; one sector holds at most 75% |
| Debt Long-Short | Interval scheme; weekly redemption listed |
| Sector Rotation Long-Short | 80% spread over no more than 4 sectors |
| Equity Ex-Top 100 Long-Short | 65% held outside the top 100 stocks |
| Equity Long-Short | 80% equity |
Unhedged short derivative exposure is capped at 25% of net assets in each strategy. Interval and close-ended strategies must be exchange-listed.
The NRI question
On 24 September 2026 SEBI's Board approved deemed accredited-investor status for persons resident outside India, and the AIF Regulations were amended (Gazette 14 October 2026). The Mutual Funds Regulations adopt that definition, but no circular applies it to SIFs, so access below Rs 10 lakh is not settled. Indian foreign exchange treatment of SIF units is not covered by our sources.
Abroad in short
- USA: the starting point is the usual PFIC view. Interval strategies held outside a demat account raise an open FBAR question about regular redemptions.
- Canada: we found no source classifying SIF units; Form T1135 applies once total foreign cost goes above CAD 100,000.
- UK: interval and close-ended strategies may be limited-life arrangements, which is not settled.
- India and Europe: apply the general rules that fit the fund's structure, as no official source speaks to these new products yet.
Our checklist
The New-Product Margin Book, per product:
- The strategy and its redemption frequency.
- Your total against the Rs 10 lakh floor, counted across all strategies.
- Whether units sit in a folio or a demat account.
- The date of the last SEBI circular you checked.
Mistakes people make
- Calling a SIF a fund category. It is a separate product.
- Assuming deemed accreditation already opens SIFs to NRIs below Rs 10 lakh.
SEBI may settle these points at any time; re-check monthly.
Common questions
How does a SIF differ from a normal scheme?
It may take limited short positions and carries a Rs 10 lakh minimum. Normal schemes have no SEBI-set ticket size.
Can an NRI invest in a SIF?
That is not settled below Rs 10 lakh. Fund houses can also set their own limits for U.S. and Canada residents.
Is MF Lite a new category?
No. It is a lighter registration for fund houses that run only specified passive schemes.
