Hybrid funds in India: seven categories that mix shares and bonds

Hybrid funds blend equity and debt. Here are SEBI's seven categories, which India tax class each usually gets for FY 2026-27, and what holders in the U.S., Canada, the UK and Europe should note.

Prepared by Prem Tax and Accounting Corp. Last checked against official sources on November 5, 2026.

A hybrid fund mixes shares and bonds in one scheme, and SEBI has seven categories for it. The Seven-Blend Slice Sheet below shows each blend and the tax class it usually gets. It recommends nothing.

At a glance
  • Blends run from 10-25% equity (Conservative) to 65-80% (Aggressive), with some categories having no fixed band.
  • SEBI publishes no typical risk level for a category; each scheme's is recalculated monthly.
  • India, FY 2026-27: the class follows the holdings, so one category can land in different tax classes.
  • U.S.: usually a PFIC, the practitioner view.

Slide show: Hybrid categories in four slides

  1. Debt-heavy

Conservative Hybrid holds 10-25% equity and 75-90% debt.

  2. Even and equity-heavy

Balanced Hybrid is 40-60% each, with no arbitrage. Aggressive Hybrid is 65-80% equity.

  3. Flexible

Balanced Advantage has no fixed band. Multi Asset needs three asset classes at 10% or more each.

  4. Hedged

Arbitrage and Equity Savings keep 65% in equity and equity-related holdings, partly hedged.

What SEBI requires, and the usual tax class

CategoryRuleUsual India class
Conservative HybridEquity 10-25%, debt 75-90%Specified
Balanced HybridEquity 40-60%, debt 40-60%Neither test met
Aggressive HybridEquity 65-80%, debt 20-35%Equity-oriented, if Indian listed shares stay at 65%
Balanced Advantage (Dynamic Asset Allocation)Dynamic, no bandDepends on the fund
Multi Asset Allocation3 or more asset classes, 10% eachDepends, often neither test
Arbitrage65% equity and equity-related, no InvITsEquity-oriented in practice (not settled)
Equity Savings65% equity, net equity 15-40%, 10% debtEquity-oriented in practice (not settled)

Rates, FY 2026-27: equity-oriented 20% short term and 12.5% long term (over 12 months) above Rs 1.25 lakh a year. Specified: slab rate, never long term for units bought from 1 April 2023. Neither: slab rate, or 12.5% after 24 months (12 if listed). NRI tax deducted is 20%, 12.5% or 30% plus surcharge and 4% cess. For hedged equity, the law is silent, so that point is not settled. Whether one fund house may run both Balanced and Aggressive Hybrid funds is not settled.

Abroad in short

  • USA: reported like other Indian schemes; the small-holding relief on Form 8621 applies only with no excess distribution.
  • Canada: no PFIC regime; Form T1135 applies above CAD 100,000 of total foreign cost.
  • UK: Conservative Hybrid is likely a bond fund; Balanced Hybrid and Multi Asset depend on the exact class on HMRC's list. That list of 2 November 2026 includes one arbitrage class.
  • Germany: a 30% exemption needs over 50% equity, and Balanced Hybrid may get 15%; proof is needed. France: 31.4% flat tax on 2026 payouts and gains.

Our checklist

The Seven-Blend Slice Sheet, per holding:

  • The category and the fund's latest equity share.
  • The tax class the fund house reports for the year.
  • The purchase date of every lot, since SIP instalments straddle 1 April 2023.

Mistakes people make

  • Assuming the category fixes the tax class. Holdings decide it each year.
  • Treating 30% deducted on a specified fund as final. The tax due may be lower.

Re-check classes each April.

Common questions

Is an arbitrage fund taxed like a debt fund?

Usually not. The law counts equity shares and says nothing about hedges, so such funds are generally treated as equity-oriented if they meet the 65% test, a practice reading rather than a ruling.

What is Balanced Advantage?

A category with no fixed equity band; the manager shifts the mix. SEBI uses both that name and Dynamic Asset Allocation.

Does SEBI call any hybrid fund safe?

No. Each scheme shows a risk-o-meter from Low to Very High, recalculated monthly.
