Treasury completes automatic enrollment

Every eligible child under 18 with a Social Security number and no account now has a Trump Account ready to be claimed: more than 60 million additional children. A parent or guardian claims it in the official app, which is also required before the $1,000 seed and other contributions can be added.

Proposed rules on eligible investments

Funds may be invested only in a mutual fund or ETF that tracks an index of primarily U.S. companies, uses no leverage and charges no more than 0.1% a year. If no choice is made, the trustee picks an eligible option. Comments are due October 20, 2026.

Proposed rules on employer contributions

Employers may give up to $2,500 a year, tax-free to the employee, to the Trump Account of an employee or their dependent through a separate written plan that meets nondiscrimination rules. Comments closed September 25, and a public hearing is set for October 15, 2026.

Trump Accounts officially launch

Accounts opened for contributions. Parents can manage the account in the official app, add money, set recurring contributions and link a bank account. The $1,000 government seed for eligible children could be deposited from this date.

Official app released; activation begins

The Trump Accounts app became available on the Apple and Google stores. Families who had already filed Form 4547 began receiving activation emails, in phases through July 4.

Proposed rules on opening accounts and the $1,000 pilot

Two sets of proposed rules explain who may open an account (legal guardian, then parent, adult sibling, grandparent), that elections run through December 31 of the year the child turns 17, and who qualifies for the one-time $1,000 deposit.

Treasury and the IRS explained the basic rules: the $5,000 yearly limit, $2,500 employer contributions, index-fund-only investing, no withdrawals until the year the child turns 18, and a notice that regulations would follow.
