Where is my refund? How to check IRS and Illinois status
Check a federal refund with the IRS tool and an Illinois refund with the state tool. What you need, what the three stages mean, and when it is time to call.
Prepared by Prem Tax and Accounting Corp. Last checked against official sources on October 24, 2026.
Open the IRS Where's My Refund? tool, the IRS app or your IRS online account and supply three details: your SSN or ITIN, your filing status, and the refund figure from your return, in whole dollars. A current-year e-filed return can show up about a day later, and the status refreshes once daily, mostly overnight.
- Keep these handy: your SSN or ITIN, your filing status, and the refund figure printed on your return, whole dollars only.
- You will see one of three stages: Return Received, Refund Approved or Refund Sent. Your personal date appears at the approval stage.
- One look a day is enough. The tool refreshes overnight, so hourly checks show nothing new.
- Phone the IRS only when the tool itself says to. A transcript will not reveal a refund date either.
- Your Illinois refund is tracked separately, on the Department of Revenue's own page.

Read the stage
Compare the screen with the table, then look again tomorrow.
| Stage | What it means |
|---|---|
| Return Received | Your return is in the system. Nothing is scheduled yet. |
| Refund Approved | Processing is finished and the tool now shows a date for you. |
| Refund Sent | The money has been sent to your account, or a paper check is in the mail. The tool says when. |
Your Illinois refund
The Illinois Department of Revenue runs its own Where's My Refund? page, refreshed each business day. As of October 2026 it describes about 4 weeks for an e-filed return with direct deposit and 8 weeks or more for paper. Anyone filing an IL-1040 for the first time gets a paper check. Those are the state's estimates, not promises.
If the status looks stuck
- After day 21, IRS staff can look into an e-filed return with direct deposit. The tool tells you if a call is needed.
- When bank details are missing or rejected, the refund is frozen and a CP53E notice follows, after which you have 30 days to supply an account through the IRS website.
- Paper refund checks are being retired, so enter routing and account numbers for a bank, credit union, prepaid card, payment app or IRA.
- Frequent slips: cents in the amount, the refund you hoped for instead of the one printed, or a mistyped bank digit.
What to bring or do next
- Keep your filed return open when you check.
- Confirm your bank routing and account numbers before you file.
- Tell us if a notice arrives that you do not understand.
Common questions
The tool says it cannot find my return. Now what?
Wait a little. A current-year e-filed return usually appears after about a day, a prior-year e-file after about 3 days, and a mailed paper return only after roughly four weeks. If it still does not appear, recheck the filing status and type the refund exactly as printed, in whole dollars.
Does a transcript tell me when the refund comes?
No. Transcripts carry no refund date, and requesting one does not move anything along. Use the refund tool.
How do I follow an amended return?
The Where's My Amended Return? tool is a separate page and starts working roughly 3 weeks after you send Form 1040-X. Expect somewhere between 8 and 12 weeks, and as many as 16 for some returns.
Is my Illinois refund in the same tool?
No. The Illinois Department of Revenue runs its own tool. Federal and state refunds come from different agencies on their own schedules.
