How long does a tax refund take? What the IRS says
The IRS says most e-filed returns with direct deposit are refunded in under 21 days. Paper, amended and reviewed returns take longer. Timing by return type.

The IRS says most e-filed returns with direct deposit are refunded in under 21 days, about three weeks. That is a goal, not a promise. Mailed returns take six weeks or more, and amended returns take 8 to 12 weeks, sometimes up to 16. Errors, credit reviews, identity checks and bank or mail time can add more.
- E-filing with direct deposit is the fastest route the IRS describes. A paper return adds mail and handling time.
- If you claimed the earned income credit or additional child tax credit, the law keeps the whole refund until mid-February. For the 2026 season the IRS pointed to February 21 for a refund date and March 2 for the money.
- A return under review can take much longer. The Taxpayer Advocate Service cites 45 to 180 days.
- As of October 23, 2026, the IRS processing page showed paper originals being worked were received in October 2026, and paper amended returns in July 2026.
Timing by type of return
| If you filed | What the IRS says |
|---|---|
| E-filed Form 1040 with direct deposit | Generally processed within 21 days |
| Paper return by mail | Six weeks or more |
| Amended return, Form 1040-X | 8 to 12 weeks, up to 16 |
| Claimed the earned income credit or additional child tax credit | Not before mid-February |
| Return held for review | 45 to 180 days, per the Taxpayer Advocate Service |
What slows a refund down
- A missing signature or a math error.
- A claim for the earned income credit or additional child tax credit.
- An amended return or an injured-spouse claim.
- Income that does not match what payers reported.
- Missing or rejected bank details, or a check that travels by mail.
Illinois
The Illinois Department of Revenue's own guide says about 4 weeks for an e-filed return and 8 weeks or more for paper, as of October 2026. If its tool says "date not determined," the Department is waiting on the state Comptroller.
To keep it moving
- E-file, and choose direct deposit with the account numbers double-checked.
- Match every W-2 and 1099 to the amounts the payer reported.
- File once. Filing twice does not speed anything up.
- Do not plan a purchase around a date. The IRS does not promise one.
Common questions
Is 21 days a guarantee?
No. It is the IRS's general processing time for e-filed returns, not a promise. Errors, reviews, identity checks and your bank's timing can all add to it.
Why is a friend's refund faster than mine?
Every return is processed on its own facts. A credit claim, an amended return, an injured-spouse claim, a missing signature, a math error, or income that does not match payer reports can each add time.
Will calling or ordering a transcript speed it up?
No. The IRS says to call only if the refund tool tells you to, and a transcript does not show a refund date.
What if the tool shows Return Received for weeks?
For an e-filed return with direct deposit, IRS staff can research after day 21. The tool will tell you if you should call. Until then, check once a day and wait.
