An invented example
A single filer has $120,000 of taxable income in 2026. The tax is $17,966 plus 24 percent of the amount over $105,700: $17,966 + $3,432 = $21,398.
What changes each year
The IRS resets brackets, the standard deduction, gain breakpoints, gift and estate amounts, and the Section 179 and 199A figures each fall (2026 set: October 9, 2025; 2027 set: November 5, 2026). Retirement limits usually follow in November. The senior, tips, overtime, car-loan and charity amounts are set by law.
The Pocket-Card Number Habit
- Write the tax year next to every number.
- Copy the source beside it.
- Keep only your own figures: your bracket, deduction and limits.
- Mark anything the IRS has not published as an estimate.
- Redo the card each November with the 2027 figures.
Common questions
Did the tax rates change for 2026?
No. The rates stay 10 to 37 percent, but the brackets grew: a joint filer's 12 percent bracket now ends at $100,800, against $96,950 a year earlier.
What are the 2027 401(k) and IRA limits?
They had not been announced as of November 6, 2026. Last year the IRS announced the 2026 limits on November 13, 2025.
Is the SALT cap still $10,000?
Not for 2026. The cap is $40,400, shrinks above $505,000 of income and returns to $10,000 in 2030.
